Medford, OR April 27, 2015 LAST EMAIL Burpees, Miracles, 5k Run, Pictures, and Testimony of "The Will of God"

April 27, 2015

April 27, 2015
FYI: The burpee is a full body exercise used in strength training and as an aerobic exercise. The basic movement is performed in four steps and known as a "four-count burpee":

Spiritual experience this week. So we got permissions to run a 5k on
Saturday. It was my first one so I was so excited and how cool that I
get to do this on my mission
Well, a week before the race I was starting training for another race I
am doing in June with Mark. So I did some burpees which I am not too
familiar with and did some running. Well I think I was doing the
burpees right because my leg became super sore and made it hard to
walk on it. The nurse told me to ice it and not exercise for some
time. So I began to do this. It still hurt the first 3 days and about
Thursday is when I began to see improvement. So we started with a
short run to prep for the race. It still would hurt but I would ice it
right after and it would feel fine. So Saturday came and we weren't
sure if we could do the whole thing since we didn't get to prepare and
my leg still recovering and sister Vance has had some stomach problems
but we still tried. Well as we started running we were flying. We were
going at a really good pace and we both felt no pain. As we kept going
and was hitting mile 2 I was thinking how is this possible? How are we
still running and not being in pain? As I asked this I felt God
telling me it was because he loves me. He loves us. This race is such
a small thing but meant a lot for us to get to do it and we both felt
the spirit so strong as we ran that God was giving us such strength to
do the whole 5k. What's the miracle part is that we did it in 30
minutes! It was so unheard of for us. Usually it took us 20 minutes to
do a mile and a half. So we figured it may take us an hour to run this
due to our health. But no. God loved us that he gave us strength to
not only finish the whole race but to do it in 30 minutes! We felt so
happy after and it honestly was a true witness that God is there in
all things. Small or big.

Testimony: Will of God
It's been a very interesting few weeks for me. I feel these weeks the
Lord has taught me so much.  I am trying to remember it all and write it
all down so I don't forget.
A key lesson I learned more about is the will of God.
There is a talk by Elder Maxwell called “Swallowed Up in the Will of
the Lord”. This talk has changed my life and my mission. I wish I
learned this lesson long ago but as I have been praying about this
lesson I feel it would not have had such an impact on me now if I did
learn this earlier.
My testimony has grown not just inches but feet just through what God
has shown me this past week.
I have struggled throughout my mission about many things with the way
things are done.
A few are how we plan. At times I feel there is a better way to plan
than going by Preach My Gospel. I also struggled with some of the
lessons and how we teach. Preach My Gospel encourages us to invite
others to be baptized on the first or second lesson. I always thought
that's way pushy I am not gonna do that. I don't want these people to
run off. I want to be their friends and gain a good relationship with
them... And so on.
Well brother and sisters, I had this all wrong. This whole time I have
been selfish and in a sense I have been telling God how he should run
things. (Find scripture on telling God what to do)
Boy, when I realized this I knew what serious mistake I have made. This
very thing led me to my knees and helped me learn this wonderful
lesson of the will of God.
When the leader from Salt Lake came to our leadership meeting a few weeks ago I was a
little closed hearted because they addressed the very things I
disagreed with about missionary work. But it was not a coincidence
that they did train us in these things.
I remember the impact the spirit made on my heart that day. It was a
day when my eyes opened to a new world. But it wasn't new because I
knew these things before. It was a transformed world that helped me
have a change of heart and see the importance of doing things God
wants them to be done.
As I furthered my search on this topic of submitting my will to God’s,
I found such peace in what Elder Maxwell says in his talk.
He says:
"So many of us are kept from eventual consecration because we
mistakenly think that, somehow, by letting our will be swallowed up in
the will of God, we lose our individuality (see Mosiah 15:7). What we
are really worried about, of course, is not giving up self, but
selfish things--like our roles, our time, our preeminence, and our
possessions. No wonder we are instructed by the Savior to lose
ourselves (see Luke 9:24). He is only asking us to lose the old self
in order to find the new self. It is not a question of one’s losing
identity but of finding his true identity"
I have a firm testimony of this because this is exactly what my
mission has done for me.
Before my mission and earlier on in life, I was a shy person, I didn't
really know who I was or what my purpose was. If you ask any
missionary in my mission especially my companions they would tell you
they cannot believe me when I say to them who I was before my
mission. They don't see it and it doesn't make sense to them that I
could ever be shy. Because as I have strived to submit my will to
Heavenly Father's I have found my TRUE IDENTITY. I gave up all my
wants to do what He wants and by so doing I found myself. I found
someone I love. I found myself confident and becoming more Christ like
and so much more happier. I would have never known this was possible
until I had the faith to give up me for something greater. A real me.
It's hard to not know the unknown of what will happen if we do
something. I know it's human fear we all have. But! It's worth finding
out. It’s worth everything to find out if God will fulfill his promised
blessings by doing as he has asked of me to do.
I was reading in Preach My Gospel under Christ like attributes in
humility section. This section goes hand and hand with consecration.
It says:

"Humility is willingness to submit to the will of the Lord and to give
the Lord the honor for what is accomplished. It includes gratitude for
His blessings and acknowledgment of your constant need for His divine
help. Humility is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of spiritual
strength. When you humbly trust Him and acknowledge His power and
mercy, you can have the assurance that His commandments are for your
good. You are confident that you can do whatever the Lord requires of
you if you rely on Him. You are also willing to trust His chosen
servants and follow their counsel. Humility will help you as you
strive to be obedient, to work hard, and serve selflessly"

I would like to conclude with this because it really sums things up.
It teaches why humility is important and what blessings come from
being humble. And humility is part of sacrifice and consecration.
I know Heavenly Father loves me. I wish I could show my emotions with
this email because my deep love and devotion to him is so strong and
more powerful than words in an email. But know that He is our Father.
Please know he cares. And never forget what treasures he lays ahead
for us. He is just waiting to pour out blessings in our lives and he
will as we ask for them, submit our will to his will. As we sacrifice
and do things his ways. As we humble ourselves. He knows us more than
we can ever comprehend. He knows all things which is why faith is so
crucial and by having a firm testimony that God knows all things and
that he loves us, Our faith becomes stronger. We have no need to fear
of what’s unknown because we know it will always be glorious and
greater than what we had before.
I love my life. I love my self. Even more I love my mission, my
family, my friends, and most of all I love God and Jesus Christ. And I
know this church and gospel is theirs. Which means I know it's true.
I leave you my testimony and my last email of my mission in the name
of Jesus Christ amen.

Medford, OR April 20, 2015 Sacrifice 15 days

April 20, 2015
So for my last 2 emails home I would like to share in each a lesson I
learned on my mission and I advise all future missionaries or current
missionaries to ponder on the subject of sacrifice.
As a missionary we sacrifice a lot to come out here into the field. We
give up all our things back home to serve the Lord. I must ask though
to RM's... Did you know before you left on a mission or in the
beginning of your mission how much you would need to sacrifice? What
sacrifices you had to give in order to fulfill the Lord’s work? How
hard it would be to do such a task? Maybe some did know but I believe
a lot of us didn't know that much of the sacrifice we had to give on
our missions until we were tested.
A few months ago my companion, Sister Slater was taking time during
lunch to study. I asked her about it and she had said to me how she
really wants to dig into certain topics that required more time than
we had in studies so she is taking her lunch to study deep topics she
wants to know more about. Her idea impacted me a lot. I really wanted
to do something similar. So I turned to “True to the Faith” and searched
different gospel topics.
As I scrolled down the list "sacrifice" stood out the most. I feel it
is because we are asked to give so much to serve the lord that I
wanted to learn more about how I could give more and what true
sacrifice means.
Friends, I have never felt the spirit so strong in studying a topic
like this. I began to look at scriptures that gave examples and advice
on this subject and my heart has been softened. I have been called to
repentance, I have been filled with the Holy Ghost, my mind has
expanded with knowledge of the importance to sacrifice and most of all
my testimony of sacrifice is strong and firm.
I would like to share some of what I have learned as I searched the
bible on this topic.
In Matthew he gives a wonderful passage that opened my eyes more.
Mathew
29 And every one that hath forsaken (meaning sacrifice) houses, or
brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or
lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall
inherit everlasting life.

So by sacrificing our home, family, friends, and so on for Jesus
Christ sake than we can have everlasting life. As I have been on my
mission away from my family, they have received blessings that I don't
know about it but yet profound and needed for what we were going
through. If I hadn't sacrificed to be away from them for a short
period we would have never be given those blessings.
Luke 14 then also adds
33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he
hath, he cannot be my disciple.
So if I am not willing to give Heavenly Father my all then I cannot be
his disciple. This sounds harsh but look at it his way. There is a
difference between pride and humility.
When he says this I see someone who is prideful. Who likes his money,
likes his possessions, and likes himself. They aren't willing to give
any of it up or maybe he is willing to give some but he likes it too much
that he doesn't have a desire to give it all
But if we are one who desires. Who has a testimony and knows that by
giving Heavenly Father our all he will give us so much more in return.
Now as we begin this process will we mess up? YES!
In the beginning of my mission I knelt in prayer to Heavenly Father
saying that I will give him all. It was a very powerful and spiritual
experience we had together as I talked with him of how I will do this.
Now as 18 months go by do you think I was perfect at giving him my all? NO!
I fell, I was tempted, I got lost, I got prideful, I got hurt, and so
on. A lot of stumbling blocks hit me and were holding me back from
giving him my all 24/7 but THANK GOODNESS FOR JESUS CHRIST AND HIS
ATONEMENT. Because of him I was able to recommit to God daily and pray
for forgiveness and pray for strength to do better and reflect and
learn on my mistakes.
All he asks though is for us to do all we can to give him out all. He
is not asking for us to be perfect at it or that we can fall or mess
up and then we go to hell. That is not a loving father and I know I
testify that God is a loving father and will be patient and will help
our desires grow and help us give him our all.
It's hard to give our all and not know what God has In store, not
knowing what will happen if we give this up. So how do we do it? in
psalms it says
Psalms 4
5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord.
Sometimes it's hard to trust but  God never lies. A lot of us have
a hard time trusting because someone in the past lied and broke our
trust. But does God lie? If God ever lied we would not be here on
earth. The earth would not exist. But because God is honest and never
brakes his promises we have it all. All that will bring us happiness
and return home.
I am so grateful for his lesson I have learned. There is so much more
studies I have done on this topic that I wish to share later and so I
will cut it off here. But I just wish for all future missionaries to
learn and study on this topic. It's so important to give Heavenly
Father our all. It's such a glorious feeling and joy to have a
testimony of it.
And for RM's too, to remember to never stop sacrificing. Dad, you have
given up so much to give us everything and do give Heavenly Father
everything. Mom, you too. You gave us your all because of the love you
have for us. If we love God we will do all he asks and blessings will
pour into our lives. And we all need blessings. I love this idea so
much and I love my Heavenly Father deeply. With all my heart. I know
he loves you too and you too can see the joy that comes from
sacrificing your wants for other important things.
I love you family and friends. I know this church is true. I know God
is love and is real. I know Christ is our savior and will always be
here with us. In the name of Jesus Christ amen.
With great love
Sister Catherine Fletcher

Additionally scripture.
Mathew 10
39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life
for my sake shall find it.
Put God first and you'll find yourself. Because you and I are made I
his image. And when we learn and put him first we will begin to see
him within us and that's who we truly are.

Medford, OR April 13, 2015 Hardest struggle: not being able to hold kids - Testimony of member missionary work 3 week and counting

April 13, 2015 Hardest struggle: not being able to hold kids....

Not a lot of major things occurred. We found a new investigator which
was a miracle for sure since it's super hard to get those. We had a
great Ward conference in both Wards on Sunday so that was pretty
awesome. Overall this week has been great. Oh we also got to attend a
wedding for a part member family. She is super active and married a
non-member who was super cool and a great experience for us to attend.
Funny: we had a lesson with our new investigator who does day care in
her home. So when we went by, there was 6 kids in a small apartment.
Soo...... The kids were super cute but very much wild ones. And we
were their jungle gym. They were all over us wanting us to hold them
wanted a picky back ride and so much! Of course the investigator
didn't know the rules so it was hard to say anything since we are just
trying to get to know her. Boy was that a huge struggle to get the
kids to sit next to us or to not be on us haha. It was a pretty funny
experience though at the end.
Then I had a bad allergic reaction to a cat and had to rush to a
members home to get Benadryl. That was fun. I thought before my
mission I wasn't allergic to anything.... Wrong! I am allergic to cats
really bad and horses which sucks! Oh and all
plants... You learn so much about yourself on a mission.

I would like to share something I have learned on my mission recently.
Well at least recognized more now than before. How to be a member
missionary is an exciting thing.
I really look forward to applying all I have learned into this great
calling. Being a member missionary is a calling we accepted when we
were baptized. We gave our will to the Lord and promised to do all he
asks of us. Well, we are human and ignore a lot of what we are asked to
do but we can keep trying and improving as we desire after it and use
the atonement.
Besides that though, being a member missionary is the greatest calling
known to man or woman. We get to share something so special, so dear to our
heart with strangers, friends, and family.
Now some of us get really excited when we get the calling to be in
primary or young men or women's, and some may get discouraged when
they get the calling of bishop or relief society president and such.
With these different reactions to callings we receive in the church,
ponder about what your reaction is to the calling of being a member
missionary? Am I disappointed? Excited? Discouraged? Scared? Happy?
What is my response to this responsibly? My responsibly to share the
truth, the restored gospel truth with my community and others?
While being out on my mission I have gotten the great privilege to
work with wonderful leaders of the church that I look up to very much
for what they have done and continue to do. I have also seen members
at their lowest point and trying to help them along the way. Working
with members is such a great experience every missionary gets to do
because each experience is so unique and special.
I want to let each of you know that when I am released to be a full
time missionary to be called to a member missionary I am excited. I
can't hold it in of how happy I am for this to come. Being a member
missionary gives us such a great sense of true miracles, helping
others come unto Christ, helping families be sealed for all time and
eternity, to get to see them see the joy of the gospel, to see people
come out of the worst stages of life to the best. Do you feel that
these experiences are worth it? I do! So let's all be excited
together. Let's make this message of the restored gospel known to all.
How I would treat the calling to be a relief society president to do
all the work that is involved in that calling, I strive do the same as
being a member missionary.
We must give it our all, we must pray, ponder, feast, and seek after
these things. We must begin with a desire.
My eyes have been opened to this better world and it’s been such a
blessing to see the joy that comes when I share the most important
part of me with people I love.
I am so grateful for all my leaders back home and all the leaders that
I have gotten to know on my mission who have helped me fulfill my
“Fathers business” in doing his work and doing what he has asked me to
do. I know Heavenly Father loves us and desires for us to return home.
I know it's through the restored gospel we can know and live in such a
way that makes it possible to return home. I know that this church is
true and the glad message we share as missionaries will change your
life. Thank you so much for everyone's support with me being out here.
I love you and will see you in 3 weeks. :)
